Gsm is one of the few fabric numbers you can actually compare between sofas. It tells you how heavy a fabric is per square metre. This guide explains what 280 gsm and 220 gsm mean, and where we use each. All products are 30% off with free delivery across India.

280 gsm vs 220 gsm at a glance

  • 280 gsm: heavier, denser fabric; listed on our 3 seater sofas.

  • 220 gsm: lighter fabric; listed as washable suede on our ottomans and pouffes.

  • Daily wear: a denser fabric generally handles rubbing from daily sitting better.

  • Feel: weight is one factor; the weave and fibre also shape the feel.

When 280 gsm makes sense

Choose a heavier fabric for the main family sofa, where people sit, nap and eat snacks daily. On our site, 280 gsm suede is the standard, and four 3 seater pages list 280 gsm boucle: the three boucle designs below and the Sheesham Wood 3 Seater Sofa.

Where 220 gsm works

Lighter fabric suits pieces used less, such as footrests and pouffes. Our ottoman pages list 220 gsm washable suede fabric, for example the Upholstered Wooden Ottoman Stool.

Other fabric checks

  • Feel the weave: tight weaves resist snagging.

  • Ask how to clean it: washable fabrics are easier with kids.

  • Check for pilling on display pieces in the showroom.
