How to Check Sofa Quality in a Showroom: A 10-Minute Test

A sofa can look perfect under showroom lights and still disappoint after a year. The good news is that you can learn a lot in about 10 minutes, with no tools, by sitting, pressing, lifting and reading the specification. This checklist shows how to check sofa quality in a showroom, whichever shop you visit. At our Shastri Park showroom you are welcome to run every test. The 10-minute sofa test

1. Sit for 2 minutes: sit as you would at home, upright and leaning back. Your feet should rest flat and the seat edge should not press behind your knees.

2. Check the seat depth: with your back against the cushion, see whether your knees sit comfortably at the front edge.

3. Press the cushions: press the seat with your palm and let go. A cushion that recovers its shape slowly or stays dented deserves questions.

4. Lift one corner: lift a front corner a few inches. If the opposite leg lifts too and the frame does not twist, the frame is rigid.

5. Push the arms and back: push gently. Listen for creaks and feel for wobble.

6. Look at the stitching: seams should be straight, with even stitches and no loose threads at the corners.

7. Check the fabric: ask for the fabric type and GSM, the fabric weight in grams per square metre.

8. Look underneath: look at the legs and how they are fixed, and whether the base is neatly finished.

9. Read the specification: ask for the frame material, foam density and fabric in writing.

10. Ask about the warranty: get the period and what it covers in writing.

• Foam: what density is the seat foam?

• Size: can the sofa be made in your size, and how long will that take?

• Delivery: is delivery included, and when can it reach your address?
