Plywood vs MDF at a glance

  • Strength: plywood's cross layers make it stronger at joints.

  • Screws: plywood holds screws and hinges better.

  • Moisture: plain MDF swells when wet.

  • Our beds: pages list 18mm Indian plywood with PU polish.

Why it matters more for storage beds

A storage bed lid opens daily and the base carries bedding and boxes. Hinges and hydraulic fittings need a strong board to hold their screws. Our upholstered bed pages list a queen size of 6x5 ft and a king size of 6x6 ft, an 18 inch depth, a 4 ft headboard height, an 18mm Indian plywood frame with PU polish and washable 220 gsm suede upholstery. The mattress is not included.

Where MDF is used

MDF is common in budget furniture and flat panels because it is smooth and cheaper. It is fine for light decorative parts, but less suited to load-bearing bed parts.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is the difference between plywood and MDF in a bed? Plywood is made from thin wood layers glued with the grain crossing, which makes it strong and holds screws well. MDF is made from compressed wood fibres; it is smooth but heavier and weaker at joints and edges.

  • Is plywood or MDF better for a storage bed? Plywood is usually the better choice for a storage bed because the base and lid carry weight and the hinges and fittings need to hold screws firmly.

  • What are your upholstered beds made of? Our upholstered bed pages list an 18mm Indian plywood frame with PU polish and washable 220 gsm suede upholstery.

  • Does MDF get damaged by moisture? Plain MDF swells if it gets wet, so it needs sealing. Plywood also needs care, but it generally copes better with humidity.

  • Is the mattress included with your beds? No. Our bed pages say the mattress is not included.
