Upholstered vs wooden bed: which double bed suits your Indian home?

Updated: 1 day ago
Choosing between an upholstered vs wooden bed is mostly about comfort, looks and upkeep. This guide compares the two for Indian homes: what the frame is made of, how each feels when you sit up in bed, how they handle dust and humidity, storage options, who each suits and what you can customise. All materials and sizes come from the product details on our own bed pages.

Upholstered vs wooden bed: the short answer
Upholstered bed: a padded, fabric-covered headboard and frame. Softer to lean on, more colour and texture choices, needs regular dusting of the fabric.
Wooden bed: an exposed wood frame and headboard. A classic look, simple to wipe clean, firmer to lean against.
Same sizes: on our site both types are listed in Queen (6 x 5 ft) and King (6 x 6 ft).
Storage on both: box, hydraulic and drawer options are available in each type.
What the frame is made of
This is the biggest difference, and it is worth reading the material line on each product page rather than going by the photo.
Our upholstered double beds: list an 18 mm Indian plywood frame with a P.U. polish, covered in padding and either suede fabric or what the page calls "suede leather" (220gsm, washable). They are not solid wood beds, and the pages do not describe the cover as genuine leather.
Our solid wood beds: list a solid teak or sheesham wood frame with a P.U. polish. To compare those woods, read our sheesham vs teak vs mango wood guide.
Plywood and solid wood are both used for beds; what matters is that you know which one you are buying. If anything on a page is unclear, ask us before you order.
Comfort: headboard and back support
If you read, watch TV or work in bed, the headboard matters more than the frame. An upholstered double bed gives you a padded surface to lean on, so many people find it more comfortable for sitting up. A wooden headboard is firm, so you will usually want a couple of pillows or a cushion behind your back.
For sleeping itself, comfort comes mainly from the mattress, not the frame. Both our upholstered and wooden beds are sold without a mattress, with a listed headboard height of 4 ft.
Looks and room style
Upholstered: soft, hotel-style or modern look; tufted, channel-stitched or plain headboards; colour can tie in with curtains and cushions. Browse our upholstered double bed range.
Wooden: warm, natural grain; suits traditional and minimal rooms and goes well with wooden wardrobes and bedside tables. Browse our solid wood beds.
Cleaning and upkeep in Indian dust and humidity
These are general care tips, not guarantees, because every home and climate is different:
Upholstered beds: fabric holds dust, so vacuum the headboard and sides with a soft brush attachment regularly. Blot spills quickly, test any cleaner on a hidden spot first, and keep the bed out of direct sun to limit fading. In humid months, keep the room aired so the fabric does not stay damp.
Wooden beds: dust with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth, avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners, and keep the bed away from heaters, AC vents and damp walls. Our solid wood furniture care for humid climates guide has more tips.
Both: keep the bed a little away from walls that get damp in the monsoon, and check storage boxes now and then for moisture.

Durability: what to look for
We do not give a fixed lifespan for either type, because it depends on use, care and the room. Instead, check these points on any bed you compare:
Frame material: read whether it is plywood, engineered wood or solid wood, and its thickness where listed.
Cover material: for upholstered beds, ask whether the cover is fabric, leatherette or leather, and whether it can be cleaned or replaced.
Finish: for wooden beds, the polish protects the surface; scratches and water marks are easier to touch up on wood than to repair on fabric.
Warranty: our products come with a 12-month warranty against manufacturing and workmanship defects under normal household use.
Storage options compared
Upholstered: most of our upholstered double beds list box storage; some list hydraulic storage, drawers or no storage. The double bed with storage is one example.
Wooden: our solid wood beds come with no storage, box storage, hydraulic storage, or two drawers plus a box, as in the solid wood bed with drawers.
To choose the storage type, see our hydraulic vs box storage bed and wooden bed with storage guides.
Sizes: the same on both
Both types are listed in Queen (6 x 5 ft) and King (6 x 6 ft), with the mattress not included. Upholstered beds list an 18 inch depth and solid wood beds a 16 inch depth. For room planning, read our double bed size in feet and king vs queen bed size guides. If you want a king, our king size upholstered bed and sheesham wood king size bed show the two styles side by side.
Who each type suits
Choose upholstered if: you sit up in bed a lot, want a soft or bold colour statement, and are happy to vacuum the fabric regularly.
Choose wooden if: you want a solid teak or sheesham frame, prefer wiping over vacuuming, have pets that scratch fabric, or want the bed to match other wooden furniture.
Want both? a few designs are named as upholstered or fabric beds but list a solid teak frame, like our upholstered wooden hydraulic storage bed and wooden queen size bed. Ask us which parts are padded before you order.

Frequently asked questions
Which is better, an upholstered bed or a wooden bed? Neither is better for everyone. An upholstered bed suits you if you sit up in bed and want a soft, padded headboard. A wooden bed suits you if you want an exposed wood look and a frame that is simple to wipe clean. Many people choose on comfort, looks and how much upkeep they are happy with.
Are your upholstered beds made of solid wood? No. Our upholstered double beds list an 18 mm Indian plywood frame with a padded fabric or suede-finish cover. Our solid wood beds list solid teak or sheesham wood frames. Check the material line on each product page.
Is the suede on your upholstered beds real leather? Our upholstered bed pages list either suede fabric or "suede leather" (220gsm, washable). The pages do not say it is genuine leather, so please treat it as a suede-finish cover and ask us on WhatsApp +91-7838834141 about the exact material of the design you like.
Is an upholstered bed hard to clean in Indian dust? Fabric collects dust more than a polished wooden surface, so it needs regular care. As a general habit, vacuum the headboard with a soft brush attachment and spot-clean spills quickly. Wooden beds usually need only a dry or slightly damp cloth wipe.
Do upholstered and wooden beds come in the same sizes? Yes. Both our upholstered double beds and our solid wood beds are listed in Queen (6 x 5 ft) and King (6 x 6 ft) sizes. The mattress is not included.
Which type has more storage options? Both do. Our upholstered double beds mostly list box storage, with some hydraulic, drawer and no-storage designs. Our solid wood beds come with no storage, box storage, hydraulic storage or drawers plus a box. The storage type is listed on each product page.
Can I get a wooden bed with a padded headboard? A few of our designs are named as upholstered or fabric beds but list a solid teak frame, so check the product page or ask us. You can also ask about custom fabric, colour or size on many designs by sending your requirements on WhatsApp +91-7838834141.
