Sheesham vs teak vs mango wood furniture: which is best for Indian homes

Sheesham wood furniture, teak and mango wood are the three solid woods Indian buyers ask us about most. All three are real hardwoods, but they look different, age differently and need slightly different care, especially through humid monsoons and dry, air-conditioned winters. This guide compares sheesham, teak and mango on grain and look, durability and termite resistance, maintenance in the Indian climate, and which wood suits beds, sofas and dining sets. At the end we list what Golden Paradise Furniture & Interiors makes in each wood, taken from our own product pages.

Grain and look

  • Sheesham (Indian rosewood): warm brown tones with darker streaks and a bold, often wavy grain. No two pieces look the same, which is why sheesham is popular for carved and classic designs as well as clean modern frames.

  • Teak: a golden-brown wood with a straight, even grain and a slightly oily feel. It looks calm and uniform, and it darkens gently with age.

  • Mango: lighter in colour, with a varied grain that can show streaks or small marks. It takes stains and paint finishes well, so it is often used for contemporary pieces in many shades.

Finish matters as much as the species. Our Sheesham beds, for example, are listed with a PU polish and in teak, brown and black finishes, so a sheesham bed can carry a teak colour while keeping sheesham's grain and strength.

Durability and termite resistance

In general terms, teak and sheesham are both dense, durable hardwoods, while mango is a softer, lighter hardwood:

  • Teak is widely regarded as one of the most durable furniture woods. Its natural oils help it resist moisture, insects and decay, which is why it is used even outdoors.

  • Sheesham is strong, heavy and hard-wearing. Its heartwood is generally considered naturally resistant to termites, which is a big reason it is so common in Indian homes.

  • Mango is strong enough for everyday furniture but less naturally resistant to moisture and insects, so proper seasoning, treatment and a good finish matter more.

No wood is completely termite-proof. Whichever you choose, well-seasoned timber, a sealed finish and a dry room protect the furniture far more than the species alone.

Maintenance in the Indian climate

Solid wood moves a little with humidity: it can swell in the monsoon and shrink in dry or air-conditioned rooms. A few habits keep all three woods looking good:

  • Keep it dry: wipe spills straight away, avoid wet-mopping around legs, and leave a small gap between furniture and damp or outer walls.

  • Avoid heat and sun: keep pieces out of strong direct sunlight and away from heaters and AC vents, which can dry the wood and fade the finish.

  • Clean gently: dust with a soft, dry cloth and avoid harsh or abrasive cleaners. Our bed care notes also suggest a vacuum with a soft brush attachment.

  • Refresh the finish: re-polish or oil when the surface starts to look dull. Teak's natural oils make it the most forgiving; mango needs its finish kept in good condition the most.

Which wood suits beds, sofas and dining

  • Beds: a bed frame carries weight every night, so dense hardwoods are a safe choice. Sheesham is the most popular all-rounder for wooden beds; teak suits buyers who want the most moisture-resistant (and usually most expensive) option; mango works for lighter, contemporary frames. Browse our wooden beds or read about wooden beds with storage.

  • Sofas: on an upholstered sofa the wood is mostly the hidden frame, so strength and stability matter more than grain. Sheesham is a strong frame wood, and exposed-wood sofas show off its grain. See our wooden sofa sets and living room furniture and our guide to the best solid wood sofa sets in Delhi.

  • Dining: a dining table takes daily wear, hot dishes and spills. Sheesham and teak tops handle this well; mango is a good-looking, lighter option if you use mats and wipe spills promptly. Browse our dining room furniture and check the dining table size guide before you choose.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is sheesham or teak better for a bed? Both are strong hardwoods that make long-lasting bed frames. Sheesham is one of the most popular choices for wooden beds in India and has a rich grain; teak has more natural oil, which helps in humid or coastal homes, and usually costs more. Our Sheesham Wood King Size Bed is listed in King (6 x 6 ft) and Queen (6 x 5 ft) sizes.

  • Is sheesham wood termite resistant? Sheesham heartwood is generally regarded as naturally resistant to termites, but no wood is completely termite-proof. Well-seasoned wood, a good finish and a dry room with a small gap from damp walls make the biggest difference.

  • Is mango wood good for furniture? Yes, for the right piece. Mango wood is lighter and softer than sheesham or teak and takes stains well, but it depends more on a good finish to resist moisture and insects. It suits contemporary designs where a lighter, more affordable solid wood makes sense.

  • How do I care for solid wood furniture in Indian weather? Dust with a soft dry cloth, wipe spills at once, keep pieces out of direct sunlight and away from damp walls, AC vents and heaters, and re-polish when the finish starts to look dull. In the monsoon, avoid wet-mopping around the legs.

  • Can I choose the wood for a custom piece? On many designs, yes. Our wooden beds page lists Sheesham, mango, teak and acacia for custom beds. WhatsApp +91-7838834141 with the design and size you want and we will confirm which woods are possible.
