Solid wood TV unit buying guide for Indian living rooms

A TV unit is often the biggest piece of furniture on the main wall of an Indian living room, so it has to look right and work hard at the same time. It holds the TV, the set-top box, the Wi-Fi router and the remotes, and often your books and décor too. This guide explains how to choose a solid wood TV unit: which length suits your TV size, what height to pick, how much storage you need, wall-mounted versus floor-standing designs, what "solid wood" means on a product page, and how to care for the unit in Indian weather. Every product detail below comes from our own product pages and store policies.

Step 1: Match the TV unit length to your TV
TV sizes are measured across the diagonal, so a 55 inch TV is not 55 inches wide. For a balanced look, the TV unit should be at least as wide as the screen, and ideally a little wider. Approximate screen widths for standard 16:9 TVs (screen only; your TV's frame adds a little):
32 inch TV: about 2.3 ft (71 cm) wide. Our 4 ft units give it plenty of space.
43 inch TV: about 3.1 ft (95 cm) wide. A 4 ft unit suits it well.
55 inch TV: about 4 ft (122 cm) wide. A 4 ft unit will be almost flush with the screen, so a 5 ft unit looks more balanced.
65 inch TV: about 4.7 ft (144 cm) wide. Choose a 6 ft unit.
75 inch TV and larger: about 5.4 ft (166 cm) wide or more. Consider wall-mounting the TV, and ask us whether a longer custom unit is possible.
Our TV units are listed in three lengths: Small 4 ft, Medium 5 ft and Large 6 ft, with a depth of 1.5 ft. Before you choose, measure the wall, and leave space for switchboards, windows, doors and any speakers you want beside the TV. On many designs you can ask for a bigger or smaller size; see how custom furniture in Delhi works with us.
Step 2: Choose the right height
The screen should sit at a comfortable viewing height from your sofa, so that you are not looking up for a whole film. Our TV units come in two heights:
Low units, 1.5 ft high: good when the TV is wall-mounted above the unit, for large screens on a stand, and for rooms with low seating. Examples include the Modern Solid Wood Media Consoles and the Solid Wood TV Stand With Drawer.
Cabinet-height units, 2.5 ft high: these raise a table-top TV and give you more room for storage behind doors and drawers. Examples include the Solid Wood TV Console Table and the Modern Wooden TV Cabinets With Storage.
Sit on your sofa and check where your eye level falls on the wall before you decide, especially if the TV will sit on the unit rather than on a wall bracket.
Step 3: Plan storage and cable management
A TV unit with storage keeps the living room tidy. Think about what you need to keep near the TV:
Drawers: best for remotes, chargers, manuals and small items you want out of sight.
Closed shutters and flap-down doors: hide clutter. Devices such as set-top boxes, routers and gaming consoles need airflow, so keep an open shelf or a ventilation gap for them.
Open shelves: display books and décor, and keep the set-top box within range of the remote.
Cable management: check how cables will pass from the TV to the sockets and devices. Many of the TV units on our TV units page are designed with cable management; check the photos and ask us if you need a cable cut-out in a particular place.
Step 4: Wall-mounted or floor-standing TV unit

Wall-mounted (floating) TV units: keep the floor clear, make cleaning easier and suit compact flats. They need a strong wall and correct fixing, so check for concealed wiring or pipes first, and confirm with us before ordering how the unit is fixed and who will install it. See the Destiny Floating TV Stand With Storage and the Solid Wood Wall Mounted TV Unit.
Floor-standing TV units: are easier to place, move and rearrange, which helps in rented homes. Cabinet-height designs, such as the Entertainment Center with Storage, also give you the most storage.
Step 5: Solid wood, teak and plywood: read the material line
"Solid wood TV unit" is used loosely online, so always read the material line on the product page. A unit made entirely of solid timber is heavy and shows natural grain on every surface. Many wooden TV units combine solid wood with plywood, which is used for wide panels and backs because it is generally stable and less prone to warping. Our TV unit product pages list the material as teak wood and plywood, with a PU polish.
Teak (Sagwan): is valued for its strength and grain. Read our guide to sheesham vs teak vs mango wood to compare woods for Indian homes.
PU polish: gives the wood a protective, easy-to-wipe finish.
Ask before you order: if you need a particular wood, finish or construction, confirm it with us on WhatsApp and get it in your order confirmation.
Caring for a wooden TV unit
These tips come from the care notes on our TV unit product pages:
Dust regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, and avoid abrasive materials that can scratch the finish.
For deeper cleaning, use a slightly damp cloth with a mild cleaner, and test the cleaner on a small area first.
Do not soak the wood; make sure every surface dries completely after cleaning.
Do not overload the unit with heavy items, to prevent damage or sagging.
Solid wood naturally expands and contracts with the seasons, especially through the monsoon and Delhi winters. Keep the unit away from constant water and damp walls.

Frequently asked questions
What size TV unit do I need for a 55 inch TV? A 55 inch screen is roughly 4 ft (about 122 cm) wide, so choose a TV unit at least that wide, and ideally a little wider. Our TV units are listed in 4 ft, 5 ft and 6 ft lengths; for a 55 inch TV the 5 ft size leaves some space on each side. Check the exact width on your TV's spec sheet before you order.
Are your TV units made of solid wood? Our TV unit product pages list the material as teak wood and plywood, with a PU polish. If you need a particular construction or finish, confirm it with us on WhatsApp (+91-7838834141) before you place the order.
Should I choose a wall-mounted or a floor-standing TV unit? A wall-mounted (floating) unit keeps the floor clear and suits small rooms, but it needs a strong wall and correct fixing. A floor-standing unit is easier to place and move, and a cabinet-height design gives more storage. Pick based on your wall, your floor space and how much you need to store.
Do your TV units come with storage? Yes. Our range includes TV units with drawers, closed shutters, flap-down doors and open shelves. Each product page shows the layout in its photos and lists the height: 1.5 ft for low designs and 2.5 ft for cabinet-height designs.
What warranty do your TV units have? Our products come with a 12-month warranty against manufacturing and workmanship defects under normal household use. Natural wood movement, such as seasonal cracks in solid wood, and damage from incorrect assembly or installation by the customer are not covered. The full terms are on our Store Policies page.
Can I see TV units at your Delhi showroom? Yes. Our showroom is at Gate No. 4, Shastri Park, Shahdara, Delhi 110053. WhatsApp +91-7838834141 before you visit so we can tell you which TV unit designs and finishes you can see that day.
